What You Need Know to Navigate Your Next Cybersecurity Conference

First off, what is a cybersecurity conference? A cybersecurity conference can have many formats. Some conferences include training sessions and new cybersecurity product demonstrations, while others include competitions. It is always best to review the agenda online before signing up to know exactly what is included. However, common to all cybersecurity conferences is a focus on cybersecurity trends and new concepts in cyber. Over the years the number of conferences have increased. The pandemic created an opportunity for cybersecurity professionals to take advantage of the numerous virtual conferences internationally from the comfort of their own office or home.

Who Should Attend a Cybersecurity Conference?

One of the most important questions we hear is, who should attend a cybersecurity conference? There are the obvious answers, Chief Information Officers, cybersecurity professionals and of course those in the field of cybersecurity solutions. However, the list should not stop there. C-suite professionals and those who are leaders within their company, regardless of IT technical experience will benefit from attending these conferences. Another group of individuals who will benefit is students. That is right. Individuals who are attending university, college, taking cybersecurity courses and online cybersecurity training should consider attending. Not only will it be a great opportunity to learn from some of the best in the field, but it provides an opportunity to network and perhaps find the perfect mentor.

Tips for Making the Most Out of a Cybersecurity Conference

  1. Make connections. Conferences provide plenty of time to connect with others. Don’t skip social times, such as coffee hours or breaks between sessions. Use this time to mingle and make connections with others in the industry.
  2. Ask questions. Just like in school, you learn more when you engage and ask questions. Speakers appreciate your questions and of course you are attending to learn something new.
  3. Sign up to attend presentations. Attending the presentations is one of the best learning opportunities. Don’t forget to introduce yourself to the speaker when they are done.
  4. Go outside your comfort zone. When choosing presentations, make sure to choose ones that are new concepts or at least new to you.
  5. Make connections last. Connect with speakers and others that you have met. How? Consider reaching out through social channels such as LinkedIn. Remember to include a personal note with your request to connect, reminding them that you met them (or watched their presentation) at the cybersecurity conference. If you are part of a CompTIA certification group or an Arcitura certification group on LinkedIn you may already have a second or third connection with some of the people you are meeting, making the relationship even easier to last.
